A striking timber-look interior brings warmth and character to an award-winning civic landmark in the heart of Fremantle, WA.
Located in Kings Square, Fremantle, Walyalup Civic Centre is a significant public building designed by KHA Studio and delivered by Pindan Contracting. The project went on to receive the National Award for Public Architecture at the 2022 National Architecture Awards.
Creating Warmth and Visual Impact
SUPAWOOD supplied architectural lining solutions for the centre’s interior, helping create a warm and distinctive environment across key ceiling and wall areas.
SUPASLAT in an NTV Blackbutt finish was used across ceilings and walls, introducing the natural appearance and linear detailing of timber into the civic spaces.
A standout element of the project is the feature ceiling, where SUPAWOOD WAVE BLADE was also specified in NTV Blackbutt. The sculptural ceiling treatment adds another dimension to the interior, creating visual movement overhead while maintaining continuity with the surrounding timber-look finishes.
Together, the ceiling and wall applications contribute to an interior with a strong architectural identity, complementing the civic character of the building.
A collaborative Result
The project brought together KHA Studio, Pindan Contracting, installer JP Blue and SUPAWOOD, with SUPAWOOD’s project team supporting the delivery of the architectural lining elements.
Feedback following completion was extremely positive.
KHA described the outcome as an “A1 product & service”, while Pindan Contracting commented that the finished project “looks very good” and expressed their satisfaction with SUPAWOOD’s service.
An Award-Winning Civic Destination
Walyalup Civic Centre has since received national recognition, winning the National Award for Public Architecture at the 2022 National Architecture Awards.
The completed project demonstrates how carefully considered architectural lining systems can contribute warmth, texture and visual interest to large-scale public interiors.
