The Glasshouse Theatre at QPAC represents a refined fusion of architectural ambition and acoustic precision, delivered through a collaboration between internationally renowned architects Blight Rayner and Snøhetta, with construction by Lendlease.
This landmark venue demanded an interior solution that could respond to both the visual warmth of a contemporary performance space and the technical requirements of a world-class theatre.
Design Vision & Challenges
At the heart of the project was a highly complex design language featuring custom compound curved panels throughout the theatre and extensive panelling across the foyer spaces. These flowing geometries required not only precision manufacturing but also a deep understanding of how materials behave in three-dimensional forms.
SUPAWOOD’s Contribution
SUPAWOOD was engaged to deliver tailored lining solutions using:
- Qtr Cut QLD Grey Ironbark Mismatched NTV SUPALINE Panels with a Custom Brown stain.
- Solid QLD Grey Ironbark slatted Panels with a Custom Brown stain.

Working closely with the project team and installer Superior Walls & Ceilings (Aust) Pty Ltd, SUPAWOOD developed bespoke panel systems capable of achieving the required curved forms while maintaining consistency and performance.
A key aspect of the project was material selection. SUPAWOOD collaborated with stakeholders to refine veneer options that aligned with the client’s vision. This included:
- Selecting a native Australian Grey Ironbark veneer
- Ensuring all materials met PEFC/FSC certification standards
- Developing custom stain & Paint Finishes to achieve the desired regional tone specified by the architect and client
- Craftsmanship & Outcome
Through advanced manufacturing techniques and careful finishing, SUPAWOOD delivered a solution that enhances both the acoustic integrity and visual warmth of the theatre.
The result is a richly textured interior that celebrates Australian materials while meeting the rigorous demands of a contemporary performing arts venue.
The Glasshouse Theatre now stands as a benchmark for integrated design – where architecture, materiality and performance come together to create an immersive cultural experience.
