Supaslat Maxi achieves unexpected acoustic benefits in the refit of the Duke of Gloucester bistro in Randwick, NSW

The Duke of Gloucester, a prominent historic landmark hotel in Randwick, recently decided to renovate their upstairs Bistro and Dinning area and discovered unexpected acoustic benefits.

The DOG proprietors wanted to introduce the look of heavy timber beams that would retain the character of the timber & stone theme of the old building. However, this presented potential cost and logistical limitations. The aesthetic appeal and light weight construction of Supaslat Maxi Beam proved to be the perfect solution.

A further challenge at the time was numerous unsightly services above the ceiling which needed to be concealed but also remain accessible. Steve Lundy of Lundy Building services, an approved Supawood installer, suggested using Supabab black acoustic textile to black out the ceiling above the beams.

The use of Supabab also provided the additional benefit of a high level of acoustic absorption. There had always been considerable street noise from the traffic on the adjoining street which patrons of the DOG had come to accept as the norm. This unwanted noise was significantly dampened and the patrons’ comfort has now been greatly increased.

Following installation, the improvement in acoustic quality was incredible and far exceeded expectations. Laboratory testing shows that once installed, the Supaslat Maxi with Supabab system has a noise reduction coefficient of 0.85, one of the highest available and certainly the highest for such a good looking product!

Following this unexpectedly positive outcome the DOG decided to redo their downstairs ceilings using the same system.

A happy client with happier patrons!
