Gardner Wetherill transforms academic work environment.
The redevelopment of the first floor of the oldest building at UNSW’s Kensington campus has included a stunning and adaptable use of SUPAWOOD’s SUPATILE SLAT slatted ceiling tiles.
The designers, Gardner Wetherill, were on a tight budget but seeking an aesthetically pleasing solution that ensured accessibility into the ceiling cavity was maintained.
SUPAWOOD’s SUPATILE SLAT Lift & Shift slatted ceiling tiles were chosen for their 100% accessibility into the ceiling, ease of installation and range of durable finishes.
The designers wanted to reflect the surroundings while remaining sympathetic to the existing 1950’s building but needed to stay within the client’s set budget. The aim of this re-fit was to accommodate the Astrophysics Academic staff in a more collaborative workspace and maximise flexibility of the space to facilitate contemporary methods of teaching and learning.
The SUPATILE SLAT ceiling tiles have been used to create a directional effect down corridors as well as defining other collaborative spaces. By using a SUSPFINISH Tasmanian Oak concept veneer finish, the very high ceilings have been visually lowered plus the warmth of the timber has lifted and lightened the whole interior atmosphere. The finish chosen also ensures longevity and easy maintenance.
The use of the slatted feature ceilings in this project show how Supatile Slat slatted ceiling tiles can achieve a contemporary feel while successfully remaining sympathetic to the characteristics of the existing building and its surrounds.
