Complex panel design for the Glasshouse
SUPAWOOD timber panels dominate the architecture throughout the Glasshouse at Port Macquarie and are intrinsic to the acoustic excellence of the building. This is another project where SUPAWOOD fully delivered on demanding and complex linings.
Completed in mid-2009, the Glasshouse was designed by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects. This building has become a landmark in Australian contemporary architecture and has collected an amazing accolade of awards including three Australian Timber Design Awards.
Throughout the project SUPAWOOD worked closely with the design team in both the design construction phase and installation, in total manufacturing and installing over 2000m2 of panels.
Through the exterior glass skin of the building which gives it its name, the aesthetics and warmth of the huge timber Shell Wall in the foyers hints at what lies further within. The wall extends more than 12m above the ground floor to the full height of the building and is cleverly overlap to wrap around the curved parts of the walls. Further interest has been added by highlighting the panel edges and intersections with red.
Created from SUPALINE solid panels in SUPAVENEER Spotted Gum NTV with hand applied thickened edges and concealed fixings, SUPAWOOD was able to meet all quality and delivery requirements.

The view from the stage of the 600 seat state of the art theatre is awe-inspiring. Towering up and curving around on every side, the theatre panels are custom perforated with a pattern reminiscent of a music score which has been enhanced by a black infill. The rich wood finish is SUPAVENEER NTV Spotted Gum.
The panels are absorptive, reflective and diffusive as called for by the demanding acoustic specifications. While the detail and form of these panels is functionally derived to achieve effective acoustics, the intricate decorative affect achieved is outstanding.
Twisted Panels:
This project contained many challenges but the most complex was the fabrication of the unusual twisted acoustic panels for the theatre. The Builders, Hansen Yuncken, turned to SUPAWOOD to achieve this remarkably technical undertaking and overcome the logistical feat of delivery to the remote location of Port Macquarie.
These panels were fabricated with the unique twist in the face in SUPAWOOD’s factory then transported to site as complete units ready to mount.
SUPAWOOD’s ability to deliver an extremely intricate and detailed paneling project from the design process through to installation met all the quality requirements expected by the Architects, Acoustic Consultants and the client. This is a tribute to all who were involved in the project and showcases SUPAWOOD at their best.
The Glasshouse is now recognised as an integral cultural part of the community. The staff, patrons and performers alike are all visually and audibly moved by the contribution the SUPAWOOD panelling has provided to the venue's experience.
